travel dates: July 2023
On the way home from Newfoundland, we stopped by Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod for a few days to see family. Dave has lots of extended family in the Boston area (and his aunt has a house in Falmouth), his parents came down from New Hampshire, and his sister and her family were in town from California, visiting us and other east coast family. We had vague plans to do assorted touristy outings, but in the end everyone was kind of worn out from other travels, and we mostly spent our time going to the beach and just hanging out.
Cousins on the beach!
We did take the paddleboard out once, in the inlet by the rental house where Dave’s family was staying:
So! Sun Retreats Cape Cod! I’m not going to do a full review because, honestly, my notes trailed off earlier in the trip than this, so I have only my memory to rely on! But I did want to talk about it a little; before this we had only stayed at Atlantic Oaks on Cape Cod. Atlantic Oaks is wonderful, but it’s in a completely different part of the cape (on the far eastern side, by the National Seashore), so it wouldn’t have worked for us for this trip.
I believe this campground has been here for a long time, but it’s only recently been taken over by Sun, and from what we saw they’re doing a nice job with it. It’s a big, sprawling campground with tons of RV sites, plus tent camping and cabins. We were happy with our site (site 87)…they have a few different categories of sites, and I’m not sure if this was a regular one or one of the more expensive “glamping sites.” At any rate, it was very spacious and easy to get into, and we paid $142/night for it in July of 2023. I thought that wasn’t terrible for the height of the summer season on the Cape, but I checked today (for the summer 2025 season and found RV sites under $100 available, and up to not much over $100 for the fancier sites. So it looks like prices might be coming down some, which doesn’t seem to be unusual now that the covid camping boom has calmed down.
I’m attempting to figure out the Sun branding system, and I think the fact this is labeled a “retreat” means that the focus is on seasonal sites and long term stays. They do have sites available for short stays, but it looks like the bulk of the sites are seasonal rentals.
The other reason I’m not doing a full scale review is that we really spent very little time here, since we were mostly off visiting family. So we did not get to take advantage of the amenities, but they looked nice. There are two pools and a lake:
And a surprising amount of public open space:
Note that the campground is not on or particularly close to a beach; you’ll be looking at around a 10 minute drive to get to the nearest beaches.
And that was our last big stop on our summer 2023 trip! We still had a couple of college tours ahead of us for August and a couple of overnight stops to break up the drive, but nothing interesting enough to blog about, so….the end!
