A quick post about our 2024 travel plans, which are, as is often the case in recent years, still on the tentative side. Some of them anyway.
We have plans to see the solar eclipse, complete with an Airbnb that we booked over a year in advance. We’ve been looking forward to it ever since the last eclipse in 2017, where Abe was tiny:
The days surrounding the eclipse are a little more complicated. The eclipse is on the Monday after Dave’s spring break. It’s also on the Monday after Milo is playing in the orchestra for Vanderbilt’s production of Sweeney Todd, which we would love to see (this is my second blog post in a row that mentions Sweeney Todd, incidentally). But this is also a college application year for August, so it’s quite likely some college visits will need to happen, so, basically…we don’t know! But we’re seeing the eclipse! (knock wood. Barring unforeseen complications due to weather or other catastrophes). I did have a moment the other night where I realized that after this year our spring breaks will be untainted by college visits for years, so that was nice.
Aside from that, we’ve already done a Disney trip AND Dave and I have another, shorter, Disney trip planned in May to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Like a without the kids kind of trip! Which we’re very excited about.
And our big summer trip! We let August the graduating senior pick from a few different options this year, and he went with….
(drumroll? sure)
CANADIAN CITIES!
Specifically some Canadian cities in Ontario and Quebec. And as of a few days ago, we’re all finished booking campgrounds, so plans are coming together pretty nicely. I even remembered to make appointments to get passports renewed!
The plan: We’ll drive up and spend a couple of nights on the way near New River Gorge National Park before getting into Canada at Niagara Falls. We went to Niagara Falls a couple of years ago, but Canada was still closed, so this time we’re staying on that side of things and seeing what we missed before.
Then we have stops planned in Stratford, Ontario and a couple of places along the Georgian Bay before things get very urban for a long stretch. We’ll spend time in Toronto, Kingston, Upper Canada Village, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City! So many cities! Then back to the US for a few days with Dave’s parents in New Hampshire and a few more in DC before heading home.
It’s a lot, but this is actually a shorter trip than our last few summer trips. We still don’t know what configuration of kids we’ll have with us, either. Ari will be working but hopes to join us for at least a few days at some point, and Milo is again applying for summer music programs and doesn’t know yet where he’ll be or when. So somewhere between 4 and 6 of us will be making the trip.
Beyond summer? Who knows?! We’ll be taking Gus to college in August or September I imagine, but we have no idea where. I’m sure we’ll make it to Nashville again to see Milo at some point. With no high school kids at home, maybe we’ll even manage some weekend camping trips for a change!
