Baddeck, Nova Scotia is known as the gateway to the Cabot Trail, as driving the loop will begin and end in the little village. There are a few different campgrounds to choose from in Baddeck, but the efficiently named Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground had the best reviews, so it was our choice. And….I really have nothing bad to say about it; it was a great base camp for Cabot Trail exploration. It was also not my favorite campground ever–just a good, basic campground with a great location, standard amenities, friendly people, and fairly tight sites.
Booking and Arrival
We booked on April 2 and had no trouble getting a spot for early July. Getting to the campground and checking in was pretty straightforward. The campground roads are a little tight in spots; this wasn’t an issue when we arrived, as we had a pull through site very close to the office, but a couple of the turns when we were leaving at the end of our stay were slightly worrisome. Rates are between $29 and $59CDN, depending on type of site and whether it’s high or low season (they’re open from May 10-October 15).
Campsites
Our site was a pull through close to the office and kind of up on a hill. It was one of the more spacious sites, from what I could see. All the sites are fairly close together, and some of them are back ins where two trailers back up against each other, which is not my favorite kind of site.
They also have a few cabins available:
Amenities and Activities
There’s a good range of amenities here, including nice bathhouses with free hot showers (something of a rarity in Nova Scotia campgrounds, from what we saw). There’s a heated pool and playground, a lounge, free DVDs to borrow, a ballfield, a nature trail (sometimes muddy), and a small private beach. They also have kayak rentals, and Dave took advantage of this and went out by himself one morning and had a fabulous time, with much wildlife spotting. In fact, he remembers the campground more fondly than the rest of us because of this experience.
Location and Local Area
This is what Baddeck Cabot Trail Campground really has going for it. It’s right on the Cabot Trail and just a few minutes outside of the village of Baddeck. We used this as our base for exploring the Cabot Trail, visiting the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, and checking out Big Spruce Brewing down the road.
